prettyful

I wanted to show you these two gorgeous things I got for my birthday! Both are from Vehement Romantic on Etsy. The necklace I received from my lovely sister-in-law, and the other from the shop owner! We are both part of the I Made It! Market, so we've recently become friends. YAY for new friends! All her items are so beautiful.
Little delicate pieces of nature, captured in resin.

Kali gave me this particular bottle because the leaf looks like my favorite moth, the IO!
Can you believe she just randomly found that leaf? So amazing.

One year ago...

It was one year ago we got our little Elora! She was a wee 3lbs when we got her, now she's right under 20lbs!

I can't believe she was once small enough to fit on the same bad as Neko. Now when she curls up on this bed, she fills the whole thing.
Elora
I snapped this picture of her the other day...lately she's been crawling under the covers on the couch. It's so cute!
Elora...she's cold I guess!

Birthday Alterations!

Today is my birthday!! Woohoo! Even though we're going to celebrate over the weekend, I took today to do whatever the heck I wanted. I decided I would sort of "take the day off" from my norm, and shorten these dresses. I've been meaning to get to this for awhile now. It's so much fun!

This awesomely 90's dress, I got a few months ago at Goodwill. I haven't worn it yet, because it just had to be shortened.
Totally unflattering for my shortness.

This dress I got at the Salvation Army a million years ago. I'm talkin at least 10 years ago. It's definitely a hand made vintage dress, all out polyester. When I first got it, it was way too long for me with these horrible ruffles at the bottom. My mom cut those off and hemed it up to be the right length. I wore it several times, but realized that shorter lengths suit me better.

I love this dress, because it has always fit like a glove! I have a hard time finding things that fit me do to my strange proportions.

Happy Birthday to me! Two new dresses!

Hand Drawn Mountains in the studio!

Finally, I can share with you a little trailer for our upcoming album!
(In case you're a new friend...I'm in a band called Hand Drawn Mountains!)
It's almost ready kids!

(LOL!)
So I always wanted one of these things! It's so funny because I was at St. Vincents a week or so ago, and saw the actual label tape for this. I wanted to get it, but that was silly because I didn't have the actual label maker. A few days later I found it at the Salvation Army Thrift Store!!! So my dad stopped by St. Vinnies and grabbed the tape for me! Rock!

Not to mention...my shirt is thrifted too.   :D

I love faux wood grain!

For some reason I love wood grain on anything that it is not usually supposed to be on. This is sort of amusing to me, because typically I despise anything that is "actually" wood grain. Whatever. Even I don't understand why my brain works the way it does. So here are a few "wood" things I adore!

(I seriously think I need to get this)

This is what I actually looked like most of the time:

"What is going on? When is this going to be over? ZzzZZzzzzz"
(as most of you know...I'm just not into sports what-so-ever.
But I sure do like hanging out with my friends!)

The only other day I really dress up would be Sunday, since I'm going to church. I play in the band, so I try to look a little presentable. Teehee.

Hannah...my little student!

I used to give art lessons quite often, but have quit doing that for the most part...except for one little girl. Hannah! Yesterday I did a cute little interview with her. She's adorable!

3 current music obsessions

Social Distortion - Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes released this week. So far I think it's great, except the one song sounds way too much like Mellencamp. It's sort of weird. Not a /bad/ song, just different. Don't listen to the negative though. It's amazing. Mike Ness=sexy man voice.

The Decemberists - The King is Dead released this week. Again, different from their last album, but extremely  great nonetheless. Every time I listen to it, I love it a little more! Love the REM flava!

Florence + The Machine - Lungs. Yep, I was obsessed with this a few weeks ago, and I still am. I just can't get enough! Her voice, the harmonies, the harp...perfect combination.

Kinect is Watching You...

Check out the video my son made for school. Brilliant. :D

Recycled Calendar Sketchbook Tutorial!

What to do with old calendars? Make a sketchbook!
Calendar Upcycle Sketch Book Tutorial
(as you can see, I hoard old calendars. 2004? Ha!)
Calendar Upcycle Sketch Book Tutorial
Rip out the picture you want to use.

Calendar Upcycle Sketch Book Tutorial
Trim off anything unwanted, making the main piece around 10" deep.

Calendar Upcycle Sketch Book Tutorial
Turn it over, and fold up about 2.5" or 3". this will become inside pockets.

Calendar Upcycle Sketch Book Tutorial
At this point, I trim it down horizontally to about 10.75" so I can fit it into an 8.5x11" laminating sheet.

Calendar Upcycle Sketch Book Tutorial
Laminate & trim off excess. If you don't have a laminator, clear contact paper would work too! (Oh and don't worry, you will be laminating right over the pocket so it's sealed shut. We'll fix that later.)

Calendar Upcycle Sketch Book Tutorial
Sew around the perimeter.
Be sure to use a nice bright color so it looks extra cute!

Calendar Upcycle Sketch Book Tutorial
Time to select the paper for inside your sketchbook. You can use recycled paper, scrap paper, or whatever you'd like. I'm just using regular printer paper without lines. Only use around 10 sheets so you can sew through. Trim it down so that it fits neatly inside the edges of the cover.

Calendar Upcycle Sketch Book Tutorial
First fold the papers in half...

Then separately fold and crease the cover in half.

Calendar Upcycle Sketch Book Tutorial
Line up the folds and sew down the crease!

Calendar Upcycle Sketch Book Tutorial
Next, take an exact-o knife, and lightly score the pocket line. Be careful not to cut the whole way through. You just want to cut the laminate so the pocket can open.
