Art without Boarders - Art Whino

Did I mention how much I love (and am still blown away) by the fact I live directly across the Potomac from National Harbor? Years ago, we stopped by Art Whino on the way to South Carolina to see Bryan Collins' work. The GPS took as to some dead end, because National Harbor was so new. Now I live a hop, skip and a jump from it.  It's still the weirdest thing to me!

Friday was their "Art without Boarders" opening. It was fabulous, all though at times I felt a little overwhelmed with all the people. It's hard to really look at each piece when everyone is waiting to look. At the same time it's really fun to go to opening night.  I took a few pictures. Ha!

After...
peeps

Of course, we had to stop for a treat at Pinkberry.
Here's a picture of Travis being totally ticked off because he spilled his greek yogurt.
. . and it wasn't that good either.

Overall I think Pinkberry loses as a fro-yo joint. I don't like how you have to tell them what to put on.
I like to be in control of my toppings. LOL. Still tasty though. I had the salted caramel.

Artist Interview: Christas Designs

Christa has been a good friend of mine for years and years. A few months ago, she basically erupted with these beautiful doggie portraits, and she's been busy as a bee ever since. Her heart is as equally beautiful as her art. Check out my interview with her below.

Where are you from and how did you get started doing art?

I am from the rural farmlands outside of State College, PA. I grew up in a little town called Bellefonte. It's a beautiful little town with amazing and inspiring historic architecture. Currently I live in Butler, PA a town about an hour north of Pittsburgh.

I grew up drawing. In fact one of my very first drawings at the age of three, was of a cat. My mom says I titled it "fat cat". It's funny: looking back on my childhood, my primary subject of choice was dogs, horses and cats (...and if I wasn't drawing a horse or a dog I was acting like one. Another story for another time.). So, it's kind of ironic that my subject matter has carried over into my adult life and now I get the privilege of painting others beloved animals. It's pretty great!

When did you first discover your creative talents?
My family says that I have always been an outside-of-the-box kind of thinker; even as a little girl. I would always find ways to creatively use normal objects in a different ways.
The latest light bulb moment occurred late this spring while laying in bed . My friend had suddenly lost a Great Dane and I was heartbroken for her. She was one of the very first people to help me and introduce me to Great Danes. So I knew I wanted to do something nice for her in remembrance of her sweet dog. I laid there thinking and it was truly a lighting strike moment. After a sleepless night of thinking thru the process I sat down the next day to execute painting for her. It turned out great and she and her family loved it. Since then it has spiraled out of control (in a good way). That one creative idea has lead to so many incredible opportunities and I am thankful.

What inspires you?

Life. Love. Loyalty. There is something so fascinating to me about the bond that we have with our animals. The unconditional love between human and animal is so pure and so real that it blows my mind.

What is your favorite thing about being an artist?

I love being able to share and express a piece of my heart and mind with others in a creative format. I also love creating art out of something that is old and unwanted. I like giving purpose to broken-down material, allowing it to serve as a canvas for a painting of someone's beloved, furry family member. It brings me great joy.

What is your dream project?

Honestly this might sound cheesy...but anytime I can help someone cherish or honor the life and love they have shared with one of God's creature is a dream project.

Professionally, what is your goal?

I want to work hard, have integrity and execute my art with excellence. Wherever that takes me is great-- I am along for the ride.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

A client telling me that the commissioned piece of art I painted replaced the family photo on the wall. That made me smile!

Describe a real-life situation that inspired you.

I shared in a previous answer about my friend that lost a Great Dane. That is one of the reasons I have started this; to honor and remember our special friends. I have also been inspired by my own animals past and present. Almost four years ago my husband and I had to lay our first Great Dane, Amelia to rest. That was one of the most difficult things I have had to do. So, I want to help others through that pain and grief by creating a special piece of art that they can connect with on a soulful level.

Why do you do what you do?

I do this because it brings me joy and gives me another meaningful creative outlet.

Lastly, any advice for an artist just starting out?

Be inspired by the simple and pure things in life.

Joel Quiggle Solo Show

Over the weekend we took a jaunt up to Erie, PA for Joel Quiggle's first solo show! It was held at the wonderful Urraro Gallery. I've always loved his artwork, so when Travis asked me if I wanted to go, of COURSE the answer was yes! Deadhorse was also playing, and I've been wanting to see them for a long time! They are an amazing instrumental band from Erie.

It was pretty cool because I got to meet Joel Quiggle and Brian Morgante (of Deadhorse) in person. I've talked to them several times online, which is the way I usually meet people. I'm very shy in person, so it's common occurrence for me to people online, and them and then meet in later in "real life."
It was a good day.

Downstairs was Joel's new stuff...

Deadhorse ended up playing two shorter sets. Boy was I thankful, because we missed the first set. They only split them up because some complained it was too loud, so they decided to wait and do more later. :D  But yea...they were so good. A fantastic wall of sound. Listen to them HERE.

Well Erie, it was nice to see you again. Until next time.

Interview with Stephanie Fizer

I "met" Stephanie randomly online. I honestly can't remember if it was through her Twitter, Etsy, Facebook, what have you. Regardless, she has been an inspiration to me for several years now. She is driven and knows what she wants. An amazing artist and inspiring business-gal.
Thank you so much Stephanie!

Where are you from and how did you get started doing art?

I’m from a small college town, Huntington, WV.  I actually didn’t become interested in art until about 2003 but it was love at first sketch and by 2008 I was leaving my day job to focus on art/illustrating as a full time career.

When did you first discover your creative talents?

I’ve been involved in one creative pursuit or another pretty much my entire life.  I studied ballet seriously until I was 20, attending UMass-Amherst to study dance; and I also explored a flitting interest in writing for several years.  I’d always been a bit of a doodler, but never really considered exploring the world of art until a dear friend gifted me with a sketchbook, pencils and a how-to-draw-cartoons book back in 2003.  She’s noticed my habit of doodling on every scrap of paper I could get my hands on and thought that I had a bit of natural talent that should be developed.  In hindsight, that sketchbook was probably the best gift I ever got!  I was hooked very quickly on drawing and found a passion for art that I’ve never had for any other creative pursuit.  Three years later, I was very slowly beginning to share and sell my artwork online.  By 2008 I was busy enough between my Etsy shop, commissions and freelance work that I was able to leave my office job and I haven’t looked back since.

Wherever the March Winds Blow
What inspires you?

So much inspired me, almost everything even!  But specifically I’m incredibly inspired by nature.  I live in a lovely town surrounded by forest so I’m very often inspired by the trees, the flowers, the birds and the sweet animals I get to see every day.  I’m also vastly inspired by colors, patterns and textures and am constantly examining and exploring them.  Other inspirations include books, music and vintage children’s illustrations.

A Peppermint Wonderland
What is your favorite thing about being an artist?

I love the idea that I’m sending little bits of happiness out into the world, that every time someone gets a product with one of my illustrations on it, they will find a smile on their face and in their heart :)

There's Always Room For You Under My Umbrella
What is your dream project?

Eventually, I would very much like to illustrate a children’s book!

Professionally, what is your goal?

The simple answer is that I’d just like to continue growing my business.  My Etsy shop or some other form of online shop will always be part of my equation but I am focusing more and more on licensing opportunities that will bring my work to larger audiences on more varied products.  I’m always on the lookout for something new and exciting, a different way to share and explore my work.

The Wicked One
What memorable responses have you had to your work?

Because I sell my work online only, I find that I miss out on the initial reactions to my work that I might get if I sold elsewhere.  That said, I’m lucky to get lots of great feedback and email, all of which make me so happy.  A lot of my artwork is being used to decorate nurseries all around the world and it just thrills me to know that little ones are going to be growing up around my work and I hope that it inspires them in some way.

The Good One
Describe a real-life situation that inspired you.

My grandmother passed away a few months ago.  I was very close to her, especially as a child so her passing left me feeling a bit empty in some ways.  But as I thought back on the years, especially the long walks we used to take down the country roads around my childhood home, I found that I was very much inspired by the memories.  In response to that, I’ve been slowly piecing together a story and some illustrations that I’m hoping to work into a children’s book eventually.  I’m not sure that I’ll ever actually share the book with anyone other than family, but the experience of sorting through memories, working out a story and starting to draw it has been incredibly helpful in my healing process.

Daisy
Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do because I can’t imagine doing anything else.  It took me years to find my path, I studied dance and also finished a degree in history before I really sank myself into art.  But once I found myself immersed in my artwork, I found myself feeling at home in my career for the first time ever.  I know that I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing and that’s just the best feeling!

Winter Bunny and Chilly Penguin
Lastly, any advice for an artist just starting out?

My best advice is to just be yourself.  It’s difficult to find your own voice as an artist when you’re starting out and I think it is tempting for a lot of people to just emulate a style that is successful for someone else, especially when you’re first starting out.  But the best thing you can do for yourself and your work is just to really immerse yourself in your own inspirations and experience until you find a style and voice unique to you.

Interview with Neil Slorance

Neil Slorance is an artist from Glasgow, and has been quite an inspiration to me. I love his childlike spirit, which inevitably shows through in his art. Take a minute and dive into his corner of the universe.
It will be a fun time, I promise.
